About Us
Who we are and where we came from
bikebikebike.bike is the new name for New Image Bicycles. In June 2019 we installed new shop signs. The old signs were falling apart, and we thought it was a good time to start anew. Channelling Victor Borge’s grandfather’s attempts with a famous soft drink, we were unsuccessful in registering bike.bike, or bikebike.bike, but hit the jackpot with bikebikebike.bike. And, what’s more, cultural confirmation came as well from Lewis Carroll:
New Image Bicycles started in 1997 in an abandoned hairdresser’s shop in St Dogmaels. The hairdresser had left their name painted on the window.
Like a hermit crab we moved in and assumed their name as well as the premises. We moved to Cardigan in 1998 to the old stores next door to the Clynderwen and Cardiganshire Farmers Co-op (CCF), who were our landlords for the next eight years.
No toilet and no water meant cheap rent, but we had to time our comfort calls to when the Farmers’ Co-op was open…. In 2005 we moved up in the world, to our current premises in Pendre, on the busiest corner in Cardigan.
Originally two buildings but knocked together in 1984, they have a rich 200 year history reputedly including a visit from the Beatles in the early 60s who needed to borrow a microphone from Manny Griffiths (whose shop it then was) when they played the Black Lion. ( Update: this story is almost certainly untrue, although Alun Owen, the screenwriter of A Hard Day’s Night had a holiday home locally and reputedly hosted the Beatles ).
